Emerald Cave, also known as Emerald Cove, is a captivating spot along the Colorado River, renowned for its shimmering green waters that reflect off the surrounding rocky walls. Accessible only by watercraft, visitors typically embark on a 2.5-mile paddle from Willow Beach, making it a 5-mile round trip. The cave’s vibrant emerald hue results from sunlight reflecting off the brown canyon walls, combined with green-blue algae beneath the water’s surface. For the most vivid experience, it’s best to visit mid-afternoon when the sun is directly overhead.
As far as we know there is only one Adventure Company in the World that gets 300+ HD Photos of every tour for each group so they can be more present. (You’ll have to dig a little deeper to find out which one 😉
Location and Access
Situated in the Black Canyon area of the Colorado River, Emerald Cave is approximately an hour’s drive from Las Vegas, making it a feasible day trip. Visitors can launch kayaks or paddle-boards from Willow Beach, which offers amenities like restrooms, a public beach, restaurants, and stores. It’s important to note that there is a $25 vehicle fee to enter the Lake Mead Recreation Area, though interagency passes like the America the Beautiful Pass are accepted. If you arrive before 7:30am or after 4pm there is no charge for each car.
Yes, it can be hot, but the river is cold, and if we float back with the increased current at night, it doesn’t even feel like we get enough of a workout in as guides. Guests can bring ample ice water, but our guides will provide some as well. Guests should also consider visiting during cooler parts of the day if they can’t stand a little splash in the cool water.
4:30 is best, and the late-afternoon sun optimizes and enhances the cave’s green appearance 100-fold, offering optimal viewing conditions. There’s a lot to do around Vegas, but not a lot that has a 55-degree year-round river.
Our favorite times are the 1 PM or 4:30 PM tours, with optimal cave lighting and way fewer others on the water. The 8 AM tour can be nice, but keep in mind the cave is not very well lit at all.

## Emerald Cave Guided Kayak Tours from Willow Beach
Emerald Cave is one of the most popular kayaking stops on the Colorado River near Las Vegas. Most guided tours to Emerald Cave launch from Willow Beach and typically include a 3–5 hour paddle, depending on the company, group pace, river conditions, and how much time guests want to spend exploring.
Several outfitters offer guided Emerald Cave kayak tours from Willow Beach. These tours usually include basic kayaking equipment, safety gear, and a guide to help guests navigate the river and understand the area.
Adventure Child offers a premium guided Emerald Cave experience for visitors who want a slower, more photo-focused trip with extra time on the water. Tours typically include snacks, ice waters, safety instruction, paddling guidance, and 300+ photos from the trip.
For many first-time kayakers, the type of kayak can make a big difference. Adventure Child mainly uses stable sit-inside Old Town kayaks that are designed to feel secure, smooth, and beginner-friendly while still moving efficiently on the river. Sit-on-top kayaks and clear-bottom kayaks may also be available in certain situations, but they can feel very difficult to navigate straight and change depending on wind, paddle angle, balance, and paddling experience.
Adventure Child does not currently offer unguided rentals on this stretch of river. We do, however, help guests almost every week who rented kayaks and had no idea what to do after falling in, flipping over, or getting caught in wind, current, cold water, or boat traffic.
We’ve watched multiple sit-on-top kayaks take on water and sink to the bottom of the Colorado River. We’ve also given rides back to stranded guests who were exhausted, overwhelmed, or simply unprepared — just trying to be the best Boy Scouts we can be.
Our lead guide is a Scouting.org leader with a child in Scouts, and Adventure Child was founded by dads who wanted to help parents, kids, families, and guests of all ages rediscover their inner Adventure Child and sense of wonder in the incredible natural world surrounding them.
The Colorado River can be calm and beautiful, but visitors should still take it seriously. Wind, current, cold water, boat traffic, heat, dehydration, and changing conditions can all affect the experience. For guests who are new to kayaking or unfamiliar with the area, a guided tour is often the safer and easier option.
Depending on water levels, timing, group pace, and conditions, Adventure Child’s Emerald Cave route may include up to 3 emerald cave-style stops and 11+ emerald coves in one half-day trip. Not every stop is guaranteed on every tour, but the goal is to give guests a fuller look at the Emerald Cave area instead of only visiting one cave and turning around.
For summer lighting, the 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM tour times are often recommended because the sun angle can create better glow inside Emerald Cave and along the surrounding coves.

This is the typical Emerald Cave Kayak Tour how we were trained when we started the company. We now go above and beyond. For Las Vegas Locals sometimes this works. Must be 4 people or more and must add on to a tour that is already going out if 2 or less people. Price is $84 Per Person. Does not include ice water, snacks, or 300 photos. Most of our guests have rental cars and enjoy driving in much faster, and leaving without waiting for kayaks to be strapped up on the trailer or waiting for the rest of the group.

All this being said, we absolutely love the Emerald Cave tour, it’s the butter that allows us to buy the bread and handle all the heavy logistics, planning and special use permitting to be able to offer our extensive 7-14 Hour Tour. The full-day bucket-list, Best DAM Day Tour on Planet Earth — the one we stand heavy on ten toes behind — is our Hoover Dam Kayak Tour. It sees 11 Emerald Caves in the same day and ends with very good lighting for the cave.
We also stop at about 6 hot springs, 11 Eternal Rain Caves, and see or climb 22 geothermal waterfalls, all in one day.
